“Dealing with the Socialist Past. The Case of the Kulturpalast in Dresden, Germany,” PLATFORM, May 24, 2021.
Abstract (PLATFORM Newsletter):
„In ‚Dealing with the Socialist Past: the Case of the Kulturpalast in Dresden, Germany,‘ Maxi Schreiber explores the complicated legacy of the Kulturpalast, a cultural center built in the 1960s in her hometown. Originally intended to express the German Democratic Republic’s transition into socialism, it faced public backlash after German reunification in 1990. To Schreiber’s dismay, many viewed the Kulturpalast’s distinct form as a socialist eyesore that stood out amongst the Baroque buildings in its neighborhood. But to demolish the Kulturpalast, Schreiber argues, would have meant neglecting history and local identity. Here Schreiber celebrates the renovation, which retrofitted the building to house performance space and Dresden’s Central Library, reflecting democratic values without erasing the past.“
“Public Libraries, Public Input: How Citizens’ Comments Can Inform Public Library Architecture,” PLATFORM, February 22, 2021.
Abstract (PLATFORM Newsletter):
„In ‚Public Libraries, Public Input: How Citizens’ Comments Can Inform Public Library Architecture,‘ Maxi Schreiber shows how citizen engagement can play a substantial role in the design of public libraries. Focusing on the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, which was constructed in the late ‘80s, she wonders how one could write the history of public library buildings in a way that assigns as much importance to public engagement as it does to the architects’ own agenda. Reading thousands of Chicagoans’ comment cards, which register an immense diversity of voices, Schreiber discovers that they offer a chance to learn about public library architecture not from the point of view of an architectural critic, but from people who are more intuitive in their judgments. Such community engagement, she realizes, is what distinguishes public libraries from other buildings.“
